VAT Tax specialist role!

Leading financial services company seeks a VAT Tax Specialist with a strong VAT focus to join their group tax team.  Suitable candidates will have current, relevant Financial Services/ Life Insurance Tax related experience – we’re really looking for Tax Consultants so strong VAT tax advisory and VAT Act knowledge, Tax Compliance and/or Tax Consulting knowledge and experience. Strong preference to candidates with 3 years tax consulting experience. Ideal candidates will have a good blend of the technical VAT skills and strong stakeholder engagement.

The role in a nutshell: Responsible VAT submissions and compliance; voluntary disclosure submissions, Tax Administration Act and any new relevant taxes and reporting requirements. Responsible for interpreting VAT legislation, providing relevant VAT advice to all business units including minimising tax risks, also ensuring compliance advising on Value Added Tax (VAT). Working within a tax specialist team.


Areas of responsibility:

  • Responsible for VAT apportionment methodology, implementation, monitoring and compliance
  • Advise on tax systems setup execute testing and validation, and ensuring timeous system updates
  • Ensure taxes are appropriately dealt with and that the business complies with the applicable legislation and processes
  • Manage complex related VAT work, engage with multiple teams from a tax and project perspective.
  • Responsible for putting together VAT processes, compliance guidelines, and enforcing them throughout the business
  • Monitor VAT compliance obligations of group entities and complete monthly VAT Dashboard
  • Responsible for identifying Operational Tax Risks and providing input into and maintaining Tax Risk Logs and developing risk mitigation strategies.
  • Develop and produce VAT analytic reports. Identify variances, anomalies and investigate.
  • Building Strong Relationships and collaboration with SARS, Tax Specialists and all industry related tax compliance committees including the cross functionality in Segments.
  • Assists with the assessment of tax process and financial impacts as a result of changes to Tax Legislative Changes or SARS Practice Changes or Business Structural Changes
  • Responsible for the review of complex Tax Statutory Submissions with specific emphasis on indirect taxes.
  • Ensure compliance with DCT controls
  • Alternate Representative to Tax Compliance Manager on all relevant Industry body Tax Workgroups and Committees.
  • Building internal relationships and stakeholder management
  • Responsible for monitoring, assessing and advising on changes to VAT legislation.
  • Provides advice and recommendations to the business on the implementation of new tax processes and tax controls, new products, admin platforms and systems
  • Assists with the provision of professional advice and guidance to Business Units on VAT related matters
  • Prepare and/or assist with the preparation of Tax Rulings Applications to SARS and ensure correct implementation where applicable
  • Preparation and providing support on Voluntary Disclosure Submissions and penalty remissions letters to SARS
  • Assist with addressing customer tax related queries in broker/ client areas
  • Provide input into Tax Technical meetings, National Treasury (Legislative amendments) and other Tax related bodies.
  • Management of staff including technical skill development & growth
  • Provide VAT training to compliance and advisory staff
  • Accountable for service delivery through individual effort and or through small team of tax compliance specialists


Qualifications and experience required:

  • Minimum of either a Qualified CA(SA)  / LLB / HDip Tax Law / Tax Honours
  • Minimum of 3 years tax consulting experience
  • Must have relevant Financial Services/ Life Insurance Tax related experience, essential
  • Must have strong VAT, Tax Compliance and/or Tax Consulting knowledge and experience
  • Excellent knowledge of the VAT Act and working with financial systems (Oracle a big plus!)
